Deaf Facts: Brief History...
Sign Language is the most valued aspect of Deaf culture and identity. ASL is a natural language for the Deaf, not lip-reading.
Deaf history in America dates back to the early 19th century when the first school for the deaf was established in Hartford, Connecticut. Prior to this, Deaf individuals were often isolated and lacked access to education, leading to widespread prejudice and discrimination. However, the establishment of schools for the Deaf paved the way for cultural and linguistic development, leading to the formation of a distinct Deaf community with its own language, American Sign Language (ASL). Throughout the 20th century, Deaf Americans fought for recognition and equal rights, including the right to accessible education, employment, and communication. The Deaf community has continued to thrive and evolve, and today it remains an integral part of American society with a rich history and culture.
